Crazy Love

Crazy Love: A Crazy Good Wedding Song

By Aaron Wulff
Van Morrison’s creativity has been going strong for decades, and if you’re in the market for a classic wedding dance tune, “Crazy Love” might be just the serenade for your first dance.
It’s hard not to be swept away by the heartfelt lyrics and raw emotion of “Crazy Love.” Considered one of his signature songs, Van Morrison manages to blend folk, soul, and R&B for a song that continues to be a popular choice for wedding couples.
Bride (Emma): Hey, Jenny! Can you believe the big day is almost here? I’m getting so excited.
Bride’s Friend (Jenny): I know, right? It’s going to be amazing! Have you picked out your first dance song yet?
Bride: Yes, we’re going with “Crazy Love.” It’s just so romantic!
Jenny: Nice! Is that the one where they sing, “I don’t want no part of this crazy love“?
Bride: Uh, no, that’s “Crazy Love” by Paul Simon.
Jenny: Oh, right. Sorry. Yours is the one that starts with, “I can hear the wind blow, I can see the trees bend”?
Bride: Nope, that’s “Crazy Love” by Poco.
Jenny: Is it “Like the way you love me, like the way you love me”?
Bride: Actually, that’s Brian McKnight’s cover of Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love.”
[They both laugh and continue planning for the wedding. Emma changes Jenny’s seating arrangement to the far end of the room.]
Okay, I could’ve extended this lame attempt at humor with even more references to songs called “Crazy Love” by Paul Anka, The Allman Brothers, or Frank Sinatra. But I’m not a monster.
None of these songs is as recognizable as the timeless serenade by Van Morrison. Considered one of his signature songs, Van Morrison manages to blend folk, soul, and R&B for a song that continues to be a popular choice for wedding couples.
How danceable is it?
Van doesn’t waste any time, he gets right into the song, so you won’t get an intro. The good news is the rest of the song is smooth sailing from here out.
I really want to dance a Rumba to this song, but it’s just too slow for me. Opt for Nightclub Two-Step.
The tempo/beat is easy to hear and mostly stays consistent throughout the song. There are a few pauses, but nothing you can’t handle. You won’t get much of an outro, the end comes fast, so the leader will need to listen for when your time’s up if you want to put in a flashy ending.
Since the song is a short and sweet two and a half minutes it’s the perfect length for a medium-choreographed wedding dance. No editing, fading, or cutting needed.
A number of artists have done covers of “Crazy Love,” but I’m partial to the original. If you MUST go rogue, you can google them.
If it were faster and had a little more intro, Crazy Love might get a perfect danceability score. Despite that, It’s obviously still a good choice for your wedding dance.
