Marry Me

Train's Heartfelt Proposal Anthem

By Aaron Wulff
Train’s “Marry Me” is more than just a catchy, radio-ready anthem and a popular first dance selection.
Pat Monahan, the band’s frontman has said, “‘Marry Me’ is more fantasy than it is ‘Hey, marry me.’ It’s ‘What if I did this?’ What if I took this chance in this love-at-first-sight moment and said, ‘Hey, I know you don’t know me and I’m just getting a coffee, but I think that we’re supposed to spend the rest of our lives together’? Wouldn’t that be incredible?
If you’ve ever been prone to daily encounters with infatuation (“hey, that barista is totally into me!”), then you know what he’s talking about. But you’re probably past thinking about finding everlasting love in shared glances across the street.
“Marry Me” isn’t just a song about spontaneous love. Train fans have serenaded their sweethearts with its melody, and the band has received emails overflowing with requests to pop the question under the band’s watchful gaze.
Touched by this outpouring of real-life romance, the band decided to become a part of it.
According to the New York Times, they even established a vetting process, sifting through video submissions and conducting heartfelt interviews, all in search of that one true love story deserving of a stage-lit proposal.
Scott Underwood, Train’s drummer, even donned the mantle of a Universal Life minister, officiating wedding ceremonies under the warm glow of concert spotlights. (We all need a little extra money in addition to our multimillion dollar royalty checks, no?)
The song’s raw appeal lies in Monahan’s vocals, bare and nervous, mirroring the vulnerability of that first, hesitant step towards an unknown future. This honesty resonated with country star Martina McBride, who, along with Monhan, breathed new life into “Marry Me” with a captivating duet on CMT Crossroads. Their version later found a permanent home on her album “Eleven,” a testament to the song’s universal appeal.
