Bruno Mars spent months writing a song that says “you’re pretty.” Let that sink in the next time you’re stuck on a wedding speech.

“Just the Way You Are” is the most successful Hallmark card ever recorded. It’s three minutes and forty-one seconds of a man listing nice things about a woman, set to a piano, and it became the highest certified single in RIAA history. Twenty-one times platinum. Somewhere out there, Bob Dylan is staring at a wall.

But wait, picture this alternate reality: the song almost wasn’t his. The original hook was written by Khalil Walton and Needlz for a Lupe Fiasco record. Cee Lo Green turned it down too. But Bruno swooped in, kept it for himself, and turned it into the official anthem of every wedding DJ’s playlist.

The backstory is almost insulting in how straightforward it is. Mars has said flat out: “It took me months to come up with ‘Just the Way You Are’… I wasn’t thinking of anything deep or poetic.” He joins the masters of saying one nice thing. Slowly.

His A&R guy, Aaron Bay-Schuck, found the original track from Walton and Needlz and brought it to Mars and his writing team. Bay-Schuck knew instantly. He told HitQuarters the finished song “had a massive chorus, an instantly memorable melody and lyric” and “didn’t sound like anything else on the radio.” He was right about the first two. The third one is debatable, but it sold 12.5 million copies in 2011 alone, making it the best-selling digital single in the world that year, so nobody’s asking for my opinion.

The numbers are genuinely absurd. Number one on the Billboard Hot 100, where it sat for 48 weeks. Number one in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and half of Europe. It won the Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

There’s a lesson in there about what people actually want, and the lesson is that people want to be told they’re pretty.

The music video, directed by Ethan Lader, features actress Nathalie Kelley while Bruno plays piano and various instruments, gazing at her like she’s the first beautiful woman he’s ever seen. Which, given the song’s premise, tracks.

Alright, less Bruno biography and more dancing.

“Just the Way You Are” runs 109 BPM in 4/4, right in the sweet spot. Not too fast, not too slow, the kind of tempo where a first dance actually feels like dancing instead of swaying in place while you wait for it to end.

The beat is a clean, steady pop pulse. Piano-driven, uncluttered, easy to find.

The intro gives you 16 seconds of solo piano before the beat settles in, enough time for an entrance or to get into position.

The lyrics and the music are in agreement, which is rarer than you’d think. The words say “you’re beautiful,” the music says “groovy, romantic moment.”

Now the practical stuff. At 3:41, it’s too long. You’ll want to trim it, somewhere around the two to three-minute mark. Your guests love you, but nobody needs three and a half minutes of compliments, not even set to music.

If it were me I’d tell my instructor I wanted a Rumba. At 109 BPM it’s a comfortable, natural Rumba tempo, and the song’s phrasing is regular enough that you won’t get lost. If Rumba feels too structured, this also works as a simple slow dance, but you’d be leaving the song’s best qualities on the table.

One more consideration, and I’m saying this with love: this song has been played at approximately every wedding since 2010. Your DJ has played it ten thousand times. Your guests have slow-danced to it at someone else’s wedding. That’s not a reason to skip it, the reason everyone’s using it is that it works, but go in with your eyes open. You’re not picking a deep cut. You’re picking the deep cut’s extremely popular older brother.
